North Togo, Savannah Region
The journey God led David on began (see our story or our Founder's) in the remote north of Togo (may we recommend extra sauce with the fufu?), a small country compared to other African nations, but whose influence spanned the globe (both slavery and Voodoo were at the center of Togo's historic influence, and our work for the citizens of here and Haiti have seen the hope of the Gospel rescue the beautiful people we serve!)! Easily one of the poorest nations in the world, Mentor Leaders happily helps break the cycle of poverty through Aid, Restoration, and Sustainability in remote Gbentchal, and now also 12 hours south, in Lome, its capital, where our college students cross the finish line into full, independent freedom from poverty (in our updates and emails you may see the successes of students like George, who go on to flourishing careers and family lives, blessing others the way they've been blessed (see Matt. 10:8).
Here we've seen the Sustainability (Multiplication) portion of the model God showed us work the best - at one time, Gbentchal was one of the most challenging communities in the nation, with the familiar 3rd-world behavior of children joining their parents laboring in the field at early ages, but now, with emergency and interim needs met thanks to loyal sponsors, we've been able to, by the grace of God, drill a clean water well, build a school, we're building and expanding our "House of Miracles" clinic, and more. We've even been able to see sustainability projects such as businesses generate revenue to support local children's education and practical needs!
The joy of stewarding the opportunity to serve Togo is our model for what we'd like to also bring to both Haiti and El Salvador - we believe this WILL come, but we need all of our children's needs for clean water, food, medical care, and a solid Christian Education met so we can walk them through the end of generation poverty first. If you've not heard about our Child Sponsorship program, head there and see the beautiful faces and names of the children we fight for--our "Why." We can use prayer that each one will have the equipping they need to become who God called them to be!
